THE OFFSHORE SAILING EXPERIENCE

WITH LIONEL LEMONCHOIS

A professional racer-skipper and exceptional boat preparer, Lionel’s carrier spans solo oceanic races (notably, the winner of the 2006 Route du Rhum on the 80ft Gitana XI maxi Trimaran and 2010 Route du Rhum in the Multi50 Class on Prince de Bretagne), non-stop around the world races (winner of the Trophée Jules Vernes in 2010 with Franck Cammas), crewed oceanic races (winner of the 2005 Jacques Vabre) and special passage records (2008, setting both records on the New York – San Francisco around the cape Horn and San Francisco – Yokohama passages), sharing adventures with other fellow skippers as Isabelle Autissier, Bruno Peyron, Franck Cammas. He is also certified as an offshore commercial yacht master, contributing significant skills in both crew management, safety and medical emergency chapters.

Lionel is the co-founder of Boreal Adventure Sailing and of VARUNA, dedicated to sharing his passion for sailing and nature alike during extraordinary passages to and exploration of the remotest areas in the northern latitudes.

Likeable and easygoing, “infatigable” as often defined by fellow skippers, you will be exposed to depth of experience and technical knowledge on all facets of sailing and seamanship, and a passion for all things sea and nature.

We will begin our journey in Scoresbysund, one of the largest and deepest fjord systems on the planet. We will be coasting for a day or two, depending on weather conditions, to expose you to the magnificent nature, from the tallest icebergs to steep mountain walls and glaciers, prior to setting our course to cross the Greenland Sea heading towards Ireland or directly towards France.

Weather conditions in the North Atlantic at this time of the year can change rapidly. This will call for extra emphasis on weather routing as well as maneuvering and sail setting under a variety of wind and sea conditions. We will be aware of your skills, ability and fitness levels from the onset and gradually bring you to “comfortably uncomfortable zone”, with abundant time to allow you to assimilate and apply concepts and techniques.

Depending on progress and weather conditions we will decide whether to drop anchor on the Irish Coast as well as upon arrival in Bretagne, possibly in the Baie de Quiberon (Belle Ile for instance).
